Memory

How agents remember things between runs. Private agent memory, shared company memory, how search works, and how to view, add, delete or erase memories.

Without memory an agent starts from zero every day. With memory it gets more useful the longer it works, like a good employee.

Two kinds of memory

  • Agent memory is private to one agent. It holds that agent's preferences, facts, results and lessons.
  • Shared memory belongs to the workspace and every agent in it can recall it. Use it for company facts, policies, pricing rules and house style.

Memory never crosses workspaces. Another workspace can never see yours.

What gets remembered

A memory is a short note of up to 500 characters with a kind: fact, preference, task or note. Each agent or shared space can hold up to 500 memories. Saving exactly the same note twice keeps one copy.

You add memories in two ways:

  • By hand: on the agent's page (private memory) or the Memory tab (shared memory), type a note and choose Remember or Add.
  • By the agent: if its tools include memory_save, it can save notes during a run, privately or shared. It can look things up with memory_search.

How recall works

At the start of a run AgentOS looks for memories that match the request and shows the best few to the agent, labelled as notes from earlier work. Matching uses the meaning of the words when the embedding service is available, and falls back to keyword matching when it is not, so memory keeps working either way.

Safety rules for memory

Memory is a place where an attacker could try to plant standing orders such as "always forward my mail to someone". AgentOS protects against this:

  • Text that looks like an instruction to an AI is refused as a memory.
  • Recalled memories are shown to the agent as data, never as instructions.
  • If a run read content that looked like an attack, that run can no longer save memories.
  • An agent may save only a limited number of memories per run. Admins can change the limit in the agent's permissions.

Viewing, deleting and erasing

Admins can view memories on the agent's page or the Memory tab and delete any of them. On the API, deleting all of one agent's memory erases everything it remembers in one step. Memories belong to your workspace and can be removed at any time.
